Mrs. Lula Pearl Hale (née May)
August 9, 1939 – October 4, 2025
Age 86
Mrs. Lula Pearl Hale, a beloved wife, mother, and pillar of the Yuma community, passed away
peacefully on October 4, 2025, at the age of 86. Lula was born in Mineral Springs, Arkansas on
August 9, 1939 to the late Johnny May and Lucile Shuttleworth Lula built a life of faith,
compassion, and service alongside her devoted husband of 66 years, Claude Hale.
Together, they raised three children—Sammy Earl Hale, Carolyn Ann O’Connor, and Connie
Jean Powell—who carry forward her legacy of love and strength. Lula worked joyfully in school
cafeterias, retiring from Cibola High School as Assistant Manager and serving students at
Arizona Western College with warmth and care.
A founding member of Union Baptist Church, Lula was known for her powerful prayers, soulful
singing, and tireless service. She also found joy in fellowship through the Red Hat Club and was
known for her welcoming spirit, vibrant style, and deep devotion to family.
Lula is lovingly remembered by her children: Sammy Earl Hale (m. Patricia Hale) of Phoenix;
Carolyn Ann O’Connor (m. Glenn O’Connor) of Phoenix, and Connie Jean Powell of Yuma. Her
legacy continues through her grandchildren: Christopher Hale- Colorado; Michael Hale and
Therese Hale of Phoenix; Kenyani Davis (m. John Davis) of Buffalo; Desmond Allen (m. Bri
Booker-Allen) of Columbus; Tyrone Powell Jr. (m. Jackie Johnson-Powell) of Phoenix and
Shameka Powell of Yuma.
Her great-grandchildren include Solana Hale, Dhani Hale, Maliyah Hale; Izaiah Kelley, Laylani
Davis, Sanaa Davis; Desirae Allen, Deiona Booker; Amiyah Powell, Josiah Powell, and Zoeriah
Powell.
She is also survived by her siblings Goldie Woods of Tucson, Lupe Wilburn of Texas and brother
Shawn May of California; along with many extended family members who cherished her dearly.
She now joins in eternal rest with her beloved parents and siblings: Johnny May (father), Lucile
Shuttleworth (mother), Oralee Mustin (sister), Helen Jean Robertson (sister), Jackie May (sister),
Gus Davis May (brother), Eddie Lewis May (brother), and Johnny Roy May (brother).
Her memory lives on in every life she touched—with love, prayer, and joy.
