Richard Hernandez passed away in Yuma, Arizona, at the age of 75 on July 10 th , 2024.
Richard is survived by his wife, Luz Esthela Hernandez, and his granddaughters Desiree
Hernandez, Dana De La Rosa, Elizabeth Lopez, and Sophia Escobar Lopez. He was preceded in
death by his daughter, Veronica Hernandez, who passed away in December of 2020, and by his
son Ricardo Hernandez Jr., who passed away in September of last year. Richard was born on
September 6 th , 1948, in El Centro, California to parents Maria Aurelia Rodriguez and Francisco
Hernandez. Growing up he played football before graduating from Gonzales High School in
1967. He then volunteered shortly after in 1968 into the service where he graduated from
bootcamp at Camp Pendleton before shipping off to Vietnam. He served one year in active
combat before his safe return home on January 1 st , 1969.
Upon his discharge from service Richard earned the rank of Lance Corporal from the
U.S. Marine Core. During his time in duty Richard earned the National Defense Service Medal
for serving as member in the U.S. Armed Forces during wartime, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon
with device for his serving in the Vietnam War, the Vietnam Service Metal with two stars for
serving a year in combat, the Combat Action Ribbon for having direct combat with the enemy
under stressed circumstances , the RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm for displaying tremendous
heroism and gallantry during combat, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge for his skills while
shooting a rifle.
Memorial Services to honor Richard Hernandez, will be held at Yuma Mortuary&
Crematory on Wednesday, July 24 th from 10am - 2pm. Military Honors with rifle detail will
occur at 10:15am. Followed by a reception at the American Legion Post 19 at 3pm.
